What a face wipe actually does
A face wipe is a nonwoven cloth soaked in a mild cleansing solution, usually water, a surfactant, a humectant and a preservative system. Its job is to dissolve and lift material off the skin, then carry it away on the cloth.
That model works reasonably well for makeup removal, which is what wipes were designed for. Makeup is a discrete layer sitting on top of the skin, and a cloth can physically lift it.
Post-workout skin is a different problem. There is no discrete layer to lift. There is a thin film of sweat, sebum and dead skin cells spread across the surface, with bacteria distributed through it, some already inside follicles. A cloth cannot lift that. It smears it.

2. They leave a residue that sits under sweat
A wipe leaves behind whatever was in the solution, because there is no rinse step. That residue is a thin surfactant film. Now add fresh sweat on top of it, plus the drive home, and you have a layer over your pores that clogs. 3. They add friction to skin that does not need it
