Hypochlorous Acid vs Salicylic Acid
They solve different halves of acne and are not substitutes. Salicylic acid is an exfoliant that dissolves the plug inside a blocked pore. Hypochlorous acid is an antimicrobial that clears bacteria off the surface before a pore gets inflamed. If your problem is blackheads, use salicylic acid. If your problem is breakouts after sweating, use hypochlorous acid.

How salicylic acid works
Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid, and its defining property is that it is oil soluble. That means it can travel down into a sebum-filled pore rather than sitting on the surface like a water-soluble acid would.
Once inside, it loosens the bonds between dead skin cells and dissolves the plug of sebum and keratin that blocks the follicle. It also has mild anti-inflammatory properties, which helps with the redness around an existing spot.
Its job is structural. It clears a blockage. It does very little about bacteria.
Because it is an exfoliant, it can be overdone. Too frequent use leads to dryness, flaking, tightness and a compromised barrier, which produces more breakouts rather than fewer. Most people do best with a few applications a week rather than daily.
How hypochlorous acid works
Hypochlorous acid is not an exfoliating acid despite the name. It is the antimicrobial compound produced by human white blood cells, used topically at very low concentration.
It kills bacteria on contact by passing through the bacterial cell wall and oxidising the cell. It does not dissolve keratin, it does not penetrate sebum, and it does not exfoliate. What it does is reduce the bacterial population on the skin surface at the moment that population is about to explode, which for people who train is the half hour after a session.
Because there is no exfoliation and no detergent involved, it can be used as often as you like without damaging the barrier.

Using both
They complement each other cleanly because they act at different stages and different times of day.
- After training: mist with hypochlorous acid, air dry. This is prevention, at the point of exposure.
- In the evening, two or three times a week: salicylic acid on congested areas after cleansing. This is clearing what is already blocked.
- Do not apply them wet, one over the other. Let the mist dry fully first.
- Moisturise. Salicylic acid can be drying, and this is the part people skip.
A common outcome is needing the salicylic acid less often once the post-training window is handled, simply because fewer pores are becoming inflamed in the first place.
