Hypochlorous Acid vs Saline and Salt Water
Hypochlorous acid is made from salt water but it is not salt water. Electrolysis converts dissolved salt into a different compound, HOCl, which kills bacteria on contact. Saline does not. The confusion matters because spent hypochlorous acid reverts to salt water, so a degraded spray genuinely is just saline, and it looks identical.

Same inputs, different output
Both start from salt and water. That is where the similarity ends, and it is the same relationship as graphite and diamond: identical input, different arrangement, completely different properties.
Saline is a physical mixture. Sodium chloride dissolves into sodium and chloride ions floating in water. Nothing has reacted. Evaporate the water and you get your salt back.
Hypochlorous acid is a chemical product. Passing an electric current through the salt solution drives a reaction at the electrodes: chloride ions are oxidised and combine with water to form a new molecule, HOCl. That molecule did not exist in the input.
The new molecule is small and electrically neutral, which lets it pass through the negatively charged wall of a bacterial cell and destroy it from the inside. Sodium and chloride ions are charged, so they are repelled by that same wall. This is the entire functional difference, and it comes down to charge. Full explanation of the chemistry.
What saline actually does
Saline is genuinely useful, just not antimicrobial.
- It rinses. Physically flushing debris off a surface has real value, which is why sterile saline is the standard recommendation for new piercings.
- It is isotonic. At around 0.9 percent it matches the salt concentration of body fluid, so it does not sting or draw water out of tissue.
- It is inert and stable. Nothing to degrade, no shelf-life problem.
What it does not do is reduce bacterial load. Rinsing moves some bacteria away mechanically. It does not kill what remains, and on a face you cannot rinse without water anyway, which defeats the purpose in a gym car park.
The uncomfortable part: spent HOCl is saline
This is the point worth understanding before you buy anything.
Hypochlorous acid is unstable. Exposed to light, heat or organic matter it breaks down, and what it breaks down into is sodium chloride and water. Salt water.
So a hypochlorous acid spray that has spent three months in a clear plastic bottle in a hot car is, chemically, close to saline. It sprays the same, looks the same, and costs the same as it did when it worked.
That is why the sceptical claim that these products are just expensive salt water is sometimes correct. Not because the ingredient is a con, but because the ingredient is fragile and most packaging does not protect it.
Two practical consequences:
- The chlorine note is your only free test. Active product has a faint pool-like smell. No smell at all usually means it has reverted. Brands that add fragrance remove that signal.
- Packaging is a functional spec, not styling. Opaque, UV-protective, airtight is the difference between an antimicrobial and saline. Storage and degradation in detail.
Why you cannot make it with salt and water
Dissolving salt in water gives you saline. There is no reaction, no HOCl, and no antimicrobial effect.
Producing hypochlorous acid requires an electrolytic cell, controlled current, controlled pH and filtration. pH control is not optional either: above roughly 7.5 the compound converts to hypochlorite ion, which is charged and far less effective. More on home production and why it goes wrong.
