Hypochlorous Acid vs Bleach: What Is the Difference?

Hypochlorous acid and bleach are different compounds at opposite ends of the pH scale. Bleach is sodium hypochlorite at 3 to 6 percent and pH 11 to 13. Hypochlorous acid skincare is 0.01 to 0.02 percent at pH 5 to 6. The concentration difference is more than two hundredfold, and the active form is chemically different.

The confusion is understandable, because the two compounds are chemically related. Both are chlorine-based oxidising agents, and in fact dissolving bleach in water produces some hypochlorous acid as part of the equilibrium.

But being related is not the same as being the same. Table salt contains chlorine and so does chlorine gas. Water contains oxygen and so does hydrogen peroxide. Shared elements do not make shared properties.

The practical difference comes down to two variables, and both are enormous: how much there is, and what pH it sits at.

The pH difference, and why it changes everything

Chlorine dissolved in water exists as an equilibrium between hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and hypochlorite ion (OCl-). Which form dominates depends entirely on pH.

At pH 5.5, essentially all of it is hypochlorous acid, the neutral molecule. At pH 12, essentially all of it is hypochlorite ion, which is negatively charged.

That charge is the crux. Bacterial cell walls carry a negative charge and repel negatively charged molecules, which is why hypochlorite is a far less efficient antimicrobial per unit of chlorine. Bleach compensates by brute force: it is thousands of times more concentrated. That brute force is also why it burns skin and destroys fabric.

Hypochlorous acid takes the opposite approach. It is efficient rather than concentrated, so it can be effective against bacteria at a strength low enough to leave on your face.

Why one smells like a pool and the other like a laundry

Both smell of chlorine because both are chlorine compounds. The intensity differs by orders of magnitude in line with the concentration.

A hypochlorous acid facial spray has a faint note that most people compare to a swimming pool, noticeable for a few seconds after misting and gone once it dries. That smell is a feature, not a fault. It is the only free indicator that the product still contains active ingredient.

What this means for putting it on your face

Hypochlorous acid at skincare concentration has a long clinical history on human tissue. It is used to irrigate wounds, and it is widely used for eyelid hygiene, which is about as sensitive an application as skin products get. It contains no surfactants, so it does not strip the lipid barrier, and it does not photosensitise skin.

Bleach should never be applied to skin. Dilute bleach baths are occasionally prescribed for specific dermatological conditions under medical supervision, at a dilution far below household strength. That is a medical protocol, not a skincare routine, and it is not a reason to treat the two products as interchangeable.
