Is Hypochlorous Acid Safe?

At skincare concentrations of 0.01% to 0.02%, hypochlorous acid is one of the better-tolerated actives available. It is the same compound your white blood cells produce, it contains no surfactants or exfoliants, it does not photosensitise skin, and it is used clinically for wound irrigation and eyelid hygiene. Most people can use it daily without irritation.

Why it is well tolerated

Four properties account for most of the safety profile.

It is endogenous. Your neutrophils produce hypochlorous acid as part of the immune response. This is not an unfamiliar compound being introduced to human tissue for the first time.

The concentration is very low. Facial products run at 100 to 200 ppm, which is 0.01 to 0.02 percent. The remaining 99.98 percent is water.

There are no surfactants. Cleansers irritate skin largely through detergents that dissolve the lipids holding the barrier together. Hypochlorous acid contains none, so it does not strip.

It is not an exfoliant. Unlike glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid, it does not work by dissolving bonds between skin cells. The word acid is doing misleading work here. It is a weak acid at low concentration, formulated near the skin’s own pH of roughly 4.7 to 5.75.

Around the eyes, mouth and nose

Hypochlorous acid sprays are widely used for eyelid hygiene, which is a strong practical indicator of tolerance on delicate tissue. It is not fragranced, not alcohol-based, and not an exfoliant, so the usual reasons to keep a product away from the eye area do not apply in the same way.

Close your eyes while misting and let it air dry. If you get some in an open eye it will sting briefly like any liquid would, and rinsing with water resolves it.

It is not intended to be swallowed. Misting the face inevitably means a small amount lands near the mouth, and at 140 ppm that is not a concern, but the product is not a mouth rinse.

Sensitive, dry and reactive skin

This is where hypochlorous acid tends to outperform the alternatives rather than merely tolerate them.

The usual bacterial-control options for acne are benzoyl peroxide, which is drying and bleaches fabric, and antibiotic treatments, which carry resistance considerations. Hypochlorous acid reduces bacterial load without either problem, which makes it a reasonable option for people whose skin reacts badly to standard acne products.

If your skin is already dry, use it as directed and follow with a moisturiser. The spray itself is not drying, but it is also not hydrating, and letting anything air dry on the face slightly accelerates surface water loss.

Combining it with other actives

Hypochlorous acid is reactive with organic matter, which is the basis of the only real layering rule: apply it first, on bare skin, and let it dry before applying anything else.

When to be cautious

Hypochlorous acid is a cosmetic product, not a medical treatment. A few situations warrant checking with a professional first.

  • Severe, cystic or scarring acne. Surface bacterial control is not the primary lever for these. See a dermatologist.
  • Diagnosed skin conditions. If you are managing eczema, rosacea or dermatitis, run new products past whoever is treating you.
  • Prescription topicals. If you are on a prescribed regimen, ask before adding to it.
  • Open wounds or post-procedure skin. Clinical hypochlorous acid products exist for this, and they are different products at different concentrations.
  • Known chlorine sensitivity. Uncommon, but patch test first.

Can I use hypochlorous acid every day?

Yes. It is not an exfoliant, it does not build tolerance, and it does not accumulate. Once or twice daily is typical, usually after training or sweating.

Does hypochlorous acid dry out your skin?

It contains no surfactants or alcohol, so it does not strip the skin the way foaming cleansers do. Some people notice slight tightness with very heavy use, which a moisturiser resolves.
